On Thursday, October 17, credit unions worldwide come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day and the role of financial cooperatives in strengthening local communities and improving the lives of their members.

Since 1948, International Credit Union Day® has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union and financial cooperative difference. There are still 1.4 billion people across the globe who are unbanked. Credit unions truly have the best business model to serve underserved populations. 

More than 82,000 credit unions exist globally, providing a plethora of financial services for their members, recognized as a force for positive economic and social change.

We provide scholarships to eligible members attending a community college, private/public college, or university. Scholarships are also available to members enrolled in any accredited vocational or technical program. Award recipients receive at least $1,000 to help pay for post-secondary expenses.

Higher Education Scholarships
St. Mary’s Bank Charitable Foundation Scholarships Established to assist current members attending a community college, public/private college, or university, the St. Mary’s Bank Charitable Foundation administers the program.

The Medallion Scholarship Fund
Established to assist members pursuing vocational or technical careers, this program is funded by the St. Mary’s Bank Medallion Fund and administered by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Awards vary and can help cover tuition and related educational expenses.

• In 2023, St. Mary’s Bank provided over $200,000 in donations to 190 nonprofit organizations.
• In 2024, St. Mary’s Bank awarded 15 higher education scholarships worth $1,000 each. Nine of these scholarships were given to members, while six were awarded to children of St. Mary’s Bank employees.
• In 2024, the New Hampshire Union Leader's readers recognized St. Mary’s Bank as a top credit union and mortgage lender. The "Union Leader Readers’ Choice Awards" celebrate the best businesses in New Hampshire across 20 categories, and we’re honored to be among them.
